FDA advisers support approval of obesity treatment Qnexa (phentermine and topiramate)
Source: Reuters Health News Area: News A panel of external experts to the FDA has voted 20-2 to recommend approval of the investigational obesity drug Qnexa (phentermine and topiramate). The treatment was one of three promising obesity drugs rejected by the Agency in the past two years over safety concerns and is the first to come back up for review after more extensive clinical trials. The panel said it was convinced that the benefits Qnexa offers in treating obesity outweighed the potential heart risks and birth defects associated with the drug. However the panel requested that the company conduct a study on possible heart problems and support its plan to limit its use to women who are not pregnant.
