US drug company to pay $1.6bn over improper marketing of Depakote®

According to a news report published by BBC Health, Abbott Laboratories has agreed to pay out $1.6bn (£1bn) after improperly marketing Depakote® (valproic acid).#160; The sales team were apparently encouraged to market the drug for uses that were outside of its licensed indications, including dementia and autism.#160; The court papers also said that the company marketed Depakote® to treat schizophrenia, despite clinical trials failing to demonstrate that it was any more effective than antipsychotic drugs in treating the condition.
