Retapamulin
The treatment of bacterial infections is increasingly complicated by the emergence of resistant strains, which lends an urgency to the development of new drug classes that would circumvent said resistance. Retapamulin is the first in one new class of antibiotics called the pleuromutilins and demonstrates a unique mechanism of action. By binding to a distinct site on the 50s sub-unit of the bacterial ribosome, retapamulin inhibits protein synthesis. In vitro, retapamulin has shown no target-specific cross-resistance to other established classes of antibiotics. GlaxoSmithKline has filed for marketing approval of the drug, which will have the trade name Altabaxtrade;, in the U.S. and expects to receive FDA approval by year-end.
